Your essay will demonstrate your understanding of the unit themes as they relate to contemporary perioperative nursing practice
Your concept map will assist you with planning and researching your essay and will provide evidence of these processes.
Both essay questions incorporate the same content; however, having two options allows you to determine your own focus.
This assessment has two parts: an essay and a concept map. The concept map will demonstrate your essay planning processes. It should be commenced before you begin writing your essay and should not completed afterwards. You must read the instructions for part 1 and part 2 carefully before attempting either section.
Your first step is to select your essay question. You can then move to Part 1. Please read the essay questions, then return to the concept map instructions.
Part 1: Concept map.
Construct a concept map which will be included as an appendix. Your essay question is the subject at the centre of your map. The branches of the map will be the bullet points from the essay question. Using these branches, map out your research or brainstorming on each topic.
Some branches of your map will be more detailed than others, but you must include each one in your submission. Use this information to assist you in the planning and construction of your essay. Include a bibliography with your map.
Part 2: Essay

You must attempt only one of the following two essays.
Essay 1
How can registered nurses contribute towards a culture of safety within the perioperative setting?
Consider the following topics:
- Legal, ethical, and cultural aspects of care
- The nurse as an advocate
- Working within an evidence-based framework
- Teamwork and human factors
- Managing a safe environment
Or
Essay 2
Compose an essay addressing the following statement:
Perioperative nurses act as advocates and provide safe, high-quality care to people when they are most vulnerable.
Consider the following topics:
- Legal, ethical, and cultural aspects of care
- The nurse as an advocate
- Working within an evidence-based framework
- Teamwork and human factors
- Managing a safe environment
Additional notes
- Your essay should begin with an introduction and end with a conclusion.
- It should be written in the third person and contain evidence of consideration of all bullet points from the question.
- Each section, except for the conclusion, should contain appropriate supporting academic references.
- APA version 7 referencing style must be used.
Your submission will be marked against the adapted essay rubric.
