For this assessment, you will need to write a feature article and book review for Early Childhood Australia’s Every Child Magazine on an aspect of engineering in early childhood educational contexts.

Every Child is a publication by Early Childhood Australia. Every Child is a magazine for all people who educate and care for young children, and those who are interested in current developments in topics related to early childhood such as education and care, research, public policy, professional learning, child learning, development, wellbeing, health and safety, advocacy and ethics, and professional partnerships with families, carers and professionals (ECA, n.d)

Feature Article:

Ensure your feature article:

Provides an overview and justification for the provision of engineering learning opportunities in early childhood.

Outlines engineering aspect, processes and thinking skills in young children.

Introduces and describes the engineering focus of the article.

Provides practical examples of the engineering focus in action in curriculum provision.

Links the practical examples to demonstration of engineering aspect, dispositions and thinking skills for young children.

Discusses the teaching skills and knowledge required of educators to integrate the engineering aspect into the learning environment.

Some examples will be engineering aspects like:

  • The importance of loose parts
  • The importance of building and constructing
  • The value of using natural materials 

Book Review:

Research and choose two (2) children’s books that introduce young children to the engineering aspect of your feature article. One (1) book must have a 0-3 years focus, the other must have a 3-5 year focus.

For each book:

Provide an introduction and outline of the children’s book including visual images and a link to a multimodal version of the resource. If your selected children’s book is not available in a multimodal form, you will need to record yourself communicating the resource and submit the recording.
